L’arbre mort a gagné

L’arbre mort a gagné. Étrange, n’est-ce pas ? »

On l’écrit.

« The situation is as strange as quantum physics: the Mollahs have won, peace is signed — and, at the very same instant, they are nothing but a dead tree. The dead tree has won. Strange, isn’t it? »

Strange, yes. With that cold strangeness of things that rot while smiling.

For here is the wonder being sold to us this morning: Zahaak has triumphed. On the icy vellum of Geneva, the serpent has secured its ransom — the strait handed back toll-free, twenty-four billion exhumed from their bank-vault sepulchres, the sanctions unknotted one by one like a loosened shroud, America’s soldiers folding their tents on the horizon. The tyrant has won the peace. So they say. So they write.

So they will sign it — Friday, perhaps, if the wind does not turn. For nothing has been signed yet, and already, the morning after the fanfare, Washington denies what Tehran proclaims: not a single dollar, they now swear, until the serpent has « earned » its feed. Trump says A and does B; he always has. These two-bit negotiations are mere shadow-play: they will lead nowhere.

And yet — come closer. Lean over this victor. He smells of the grave.

« The dead tree lives on by rotting, feeding mushrooms unfit to eat; its venomous sap keeps poisoning its nearest surroundings. Some, far, very far away, believe it green and laden with fair fruit — like the mirage of an oasis, a promise of cool water and delight that is in truth only death and desolation. »

There is the whole truth, said better than a thousand communiqués. The serpent is no more than a hollowed trunk surviving inside its own putrefaction. From its carrion rise venomous mushrooms — courtiers, peddlers of fatwas, generals fattened on our blood — and its black sap still poisons all it touches: Lebanon, the Gulf, the cradles. But this is no longer life: it is the slow chemistry of death.

And those who are far — very far — sign the mirage. They think they are plucking fruit; they bite into ash. The oasis painted for them is but a charnel house under the sun.

Let them know this at last, these hagglers: the people of Iran and Israel are one same flesh offered to the same knife. What threatens one cuts the other’s throat. And those who occupy our home — the Mollahs, their jailers, their hangmen — will remain, yesterday as tomorrow, our eternal enemies. One does not sign peace with gangrene; one amputates it.

So let them strut one more night. Let them dance on their Swiss stage, the shroud for a flag. A dead tree does not bloom again. The axe is already at the foot of the trunk, and the axe is us: it is January and its fifty thousand dead who do not sleep, it is every name of the Javidnâm carved into the stone of the morning.

They have won a sheet of paper. We will keep the land.
