There are journalists who comment on History, and there are those who refuse to let it be erased. Morad Vaisi (مراد ویسی) belongs to the second kind. A star analyst at Iran International, he could simply explain the inner workings of the mullahs’ regime — and he does it better than anyone. But at the end of his programs he does something greater still: he rises, and he calls the Javid Nâm (جاویدنام, “those whose name never dies”), one by one, by their names.

From the newsroom of Salam to Iran International

Born in 1964 in Kermanshah, in Iran’s Kurdish west, Morad Vaisi — also known as Reza Vaisi — first studied law at Shahid Beheshti University, then political science with a focus on Middle East studies at the University of Tehran, before a master’s degree in the strategic management of war in the United States. In Iran he sat on the editorial board of the reformist daily Salam, whose closure in 1999 set the universities ablaze. Forced into exile, he joined Radio Farda, then Manoto, and finally Iran International, where he is today a senior analyst and host of the program « سیاست با مراد ویسی » (Politics, with Morad Vaisi).

The expert the regime fears

Vaisi is no general-purpose pundit. His field is the power structures of the Islamic Republic: the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC / Pasdaran), the inner circle and calculations of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and Iran’s military history — above all the Iran-Iraq War, whose squandered chances he dissected in the documentary Jām-e Zahr (« The Chalice of Poison »). In Washington, the Middle East Institute describes him as a journalist specializing in Iranian security and military history; among his work is a much-noted analysis of the Fakhrizadeh assassination as a major failure of Iranian intelligence.

« Farzand-e Irân va jân-fadā-ye mihan »

And then there is the gesture that won him a place in Iranians’ hearts. At the close of his broadcasts, Morad Vaisi reads, one by one, the names of those the regime has killed. Not numbers — names. And after each name, the same phrase, at once litany and oath:

Child of Iran, and one who gave his life for the homeland.

He has read dozens of them in a single show. Then hundreds. In one vigil he stood for more than four hours to recite 1,044 names — one thousand and forty-four children of Iran, one after another, his voice at times breaking with tears. Where propaganda wants only anonymous statistics, Vaisi gives each of them back their first name, their face, their dignity. Born live, in direct contact with his audience, the phrase has become a nation’s password: it now appears on gravestones, in marches, on the walls of social media. Vaisi himself explains it: its sweeping adoption marks the moment Iranian society stopped borrowing the regime’s words and reclaimed its own.

That is who Morad Vaisi is: an analyst who understood that to name the fallen is a political act — the most subversive of all, against a power that survives only through forgetting.
