Pahlavi: this name that is a homeland

A man, facing the camera, refuses to shut half a century of light inside the single word « crown. » Listen to him: it is not a king he defends, it is a country.

There are words we think small which, once opened, hold an entire country. They will tell you that « Pahlavi » means a throne, a man, an old men’s nostalgia. Do not believe them. That word does not fit inside a crown: it fits inside a rail laid from one end of Iran to the other, inside a school opened at the far edge of a village, inside the face at last uncovered of a woman lifting her eyes toward the century.

« What is Pahlavi? » — a man, facing the camera, spells out what this name truly means. Video with French subtitles.

Listen to this man. He is not reciting a genealogy of princes; he is drawing up the inventory of a civilization. Pahlavi, he says, is the university and the hospital; it is the free meals of the poor child and the new shoes that the workman, for the evening of the feast, could offer his son without bowing his back. Pahlavi is malaria defeated, the passport respected, inflation brought to its knees. It is the yellow Peykan of the schoolmaster father, paid for with a teacher’s wage — and in that little car there was all the dignity of a people on the rise.

Pahlavi is respect for the Armenian, trust extended to the Bahá’í, friendship held out to the Jew of Iran. It is a country that did not ask a man his religion before granting him his homeland. This is what a regime sought to bury under forty-six years of night: not a sovereign, but a way of being great together.

The name shouted by those who never saw it

And yet, behold the wonder. Children of seventeen, who have never seen that time, who know of it only the ban, shout its name in the streets. Why? Because the voice of Pahlavi, as this man says, is the sound of Iran’s footsteps. You can burn the portraits; you cannot put out a step that walks in the blood of a people.

Those who fell for this name — our Javid Nâm, « the eternal ones, » children of Iran and gift to the homeland — are not the vanquished: they are the future that has gone on ahead. The regime holds the turban; Iran holds the memory. And memory, when it rises, is no longer a remembrance: it is a flag.

Not the banner of the jailers, but the one that was always ours — the Lion and Sun, gold upon the night. Beneath that sky, a name goes on beating like a heart.
